Police are hunting at least one gunman this morning over the shooting death of a 65-year-old woman in south-west Sydney.

Events began at about 11pm yesterday when emergency services were called to a home on Dickens Road at Ambarvale over reports of a shooting inside.

Police found a 65-year-old woman had suffered a gunshot wound to her leg after the occupants of an unknown vehicle fired several times at the home before driving off.

Paramedics worked for about an hour trying to save her, but she died at the scene.

Two other people – a 34-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, were also in the home at the time but they were uninjured.

Soon after the area was shut down and the area flooded with police as an investigation began.
