Homicide detectives are investigating after a man was shot dead on a suburban street in Melbourne's north overnight.

The man was discovered outside a home on Justin Avenue in Glenroy just after 4.30am.

Emergency services were called to the incident, but the man died at the scene.

A crime scene has been established while investigators determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
