A man has been shot dead in western Sydney, triggering a homicide investigation.

Police believe an abandoned car found on fire shortly after is linked to the fatal shooting in Canley Heights, just north of Cabramatta.

The homicide squad is investigating both incidents, which detectives believe are linked.

Firefighters put out the car fire shortly after they arrived at the scene.

There were no other injuries reported.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner and anyone with any information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
