Officers were called to an address on Days Road in Grange shortly after 2.15pm on Sunday after reports a 29-year-old First Nations man was trying to stab his father with a knife.
A detective said the man “lunged at police with what we believe is a knife, which resulted in an officer discharging three shots”.
It’s understood the man also tried to injure his father with a pitchfork.
Police said they first fired a taser in an attempt disarm the man but missed, then resorting to a gun.
“Had the police officer not used firearm I believe we would’ve had a murdered police officer,” Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said.
It was the second time officers had come face-to-face with the man in as many days, sending him to hospital for a mental health assessment on Saturday.

He returned home and a day later he was dead.
The union is calling on Queensland Health to be looked at as a part of the coroner’s investigation, pushing for a review into the man’s hospital treatment and raising questions on why he was released.
Outside the property where the incident took place, chilling screams of grief were heard by onlookers.
“They shot him; They shot my son,” the man’s mother said.
