A man has been shot by police after an alleged domestic violence incident in Queensland’s far north.

Police were called to an address on Love Street in Mareeba, an hour from Cairns at about 11.30am yesterday after reports a man had threatened self-harm.

Neighbours spoke to the man, who allegedly had a woman with him and would not let her leave.

At about 3.30pm, it’s alleged the man approached officers while armed with a knife.

Police shot the man and provided immediate first aid and CPR.

The man died at the scene.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
