The 74-year-old was “significantly assaulted” at his home in Beaumaris just before 1.30am according to police, and remains in the Intensive Care Unit at The Alfred Hospital.
Sarah, a friend of the victim who lives close to the site of the attack told 3AW’s Jacqui Felgate about his devastating injuries.
“We genuinely thought that it wasn’t looking good and we were going to lose him,” she said.
“They’ve essentially left him for dead”.
The man and his wife were in their bedroom when the doorbell rang around 1.30am on Monday.
They stayed in their bedroom, but the intruders “completely shattered” the back doors, breaking into the couple’s home of 30 years.
After the 74-year-old attempted confront the home invaders, he was seriously assaulted.
Sarah said the man suffered a broken eye socket, a brain-bleed, and a nicked jugular vein.
The man was resuscitated after the attack, and will likely require surgery to repair his eye socket.
He remains under constant supervision in hospital.
The woman was not injured but the man was “significantly assaulted”, according to police, and received serious head and facial injuries.
At this stage, it doesn’t appear that anything was stolen from the home.
