A man has died in a horror Queensland highway crash after a ute towing a caravan collided with another ute and fell down an embankment into a creek.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the horror crash on the Bruce Highway at Nirimba at 11.20am today.

The incident sparked a major emergency service response which included critical care paramedics.

The driver of the Mazda ute with the caravan, a man in his 80s, died at the scene.

The passenger, a woman in her 60s, was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the Toyota ute was not physically injured.

The crash caused lengthy delays for motorists with one northbound lane closed for several hours.

Police are seeking dashcam footage and working to confirm details of the crash.
