Just after 6am, police allege the driver of the utility failed to stop for a routine check at  on Alfords Point Road, Menai, resulting in a pursuit.

Soon after, the ute crashed into another vehicle before grinding to a halt.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver remained unharmed.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area, with Alfords Point Road closed in both directions and diversions in place.

An investigation has commenced into the incident.
