A man has been killed after a car doing burnouts allegedly hit a group of people in the Hunter Valley region in NSW overnight.

Police are searching for a driver after reports a modified Ford Fairmont sedan was performing a burnout when it hit three people at a fire trail off Haul Road, Stockrington, 22km from Kurri Kurri, at around midnight.

A 53-year-old man suffered critical head injuries and he died a short time later.

Two women, also allegedly hit by the car, left the scene before emergency services arrived.

The car alleged to be involved was later found burnt-out on McFarlanes road in Chisolm at about 2.40am.

The Ford has been seized and will undergo forensic examination.

A crime scene has been established in both Stockrington and Chisolm and police are investigating the incident.

Police are hoping to speak to the driver of the Ford of anyone who witnessed the incident.
