A man has been shot dead by a police in one of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs in front of horrified bystanders after he threatened locals with several large knives.
Police were called to Alexander Avenue in North Willoughby shortly before 11.30am Thursday following reports from residents about a shirtless man wielding with two knives knocking on their doors.
When police arrived at the scene on Sydney’s north shore, the armed man allegedly confronted two officers before a constable discharged their firearm.
The man died at the scene.
No other injuries were reported.
The terrifying incident unfolded in front of shocked bystanders at a busy Harris Farm market nearby.

2GB breakfast host Ben Fordham was in the area when the shooting occurred.
‘First and foremost for anyone around the area, if you can be aware that there is a very serious police operation that is underway around Willoughby at the moment,’ he told colleague Deborah Knight.
‘You’d be wise to avoid it if you possibly can.
‘Gunshots have been heard in the area of Willoughby.’
Dozens of police arrived at the scene as a critical incident investigation is launched.

A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will investigate all circumstances surrounding the man’s death, including the discharge of a police firearm.
