The man, who has asked to remain anonymous, had earlier swerved to avoid two women sitting on Woodville Road at Woodville at 11.45pm.
He said he pulled over to make sure the pair were safe before one of the women hurled a bottle at his windscreen.
As soon as the man was out of his vehicle, he said one of the women kicked and hit him before a man appeared and charged at him.
“The next thing I know I’m knocked about three metres up the road by a large fellow who was running up Woodville Road,” he told 9News.
After the driver had been knocked to the ground, the two women jumped into his Toyota Hilux and took off.
According to the man, they did a U-turn and the man who had knocked him down yelled a warning.
“He started shouting at me saying ‘get up off the road, get off the road’,” he said.
“The car is heading at me, about to run me over.”
The man jumped into the ute with the two women.
The 51-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
His ute was later found dumped in Alma Terrace at Woodville West.
Detectives are investigating the incident and searching for the three people.
