A pedestrian has been rushed to hospital after he was hit by a tram in Melbourne CBD.

Emergency services were called to Elizabeth Street near Therry Street about 4.30pm over reports a man, who has yet to be identified, was stuck underneath the tram.

The man was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Police said they are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and urged any witnesses with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

While emergency services remain at the scene, Elizabeth Street has been closed in both directions between Latrobe and Victoria Street.

The closures have led to tram delays on routes 57 and 19 from Flinders Street up to Haymarket.

“Passengers may consider City Loop trains or Route 58 trams as an alternative,” Public Transport Victoria said in an alert.

Motorists are also advised to avoid the area and instead use William Street, Peel Street and Victoria Street.
