A man who allegedly held up a tugboat with a gun before crashing into a police vessel has faced court.

The 48-year-old is accused of being behind the wheel of a dinghy off Kwinana Beach yesterday.

He allegedly threatened the tugboat crew with a firearm, crashed into a police boat, causing his dinghy to become airborne, and then took off.

A search including Water Police, Mandurah Detectives and Air Wing officers was launched, and about an hour later he was arrested.

His dinghy was seized and the man was charged with unlawful act or omission with intent to harm.

“Thankfully no one was injured in this incident, which was largely dynamic and confronting,” Inspector Geoff DeSanges said.

“The firearm mentioned in the initial reports to police has not been recovered – police divers conduct searches in Kwinana area and surrounding areas.”

The man faced Rockingham Magistrates Court and was granted bail to reappear in December.
