An investigation is underway after a prisoner was found dead in his cell in a Perth prison.

The 40-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell at Hakea Prison about 8am this morning.

Paramedics and staff could not revive him.

9News understands parts of the prison were put in lockdown. 

WA Police were notified and detectives from Major Crimes are attending to investigate the circumstances.

Police will provide a report to the State Coroner.
