A man has been fined $5000 after he killed a dingo with a speargun on K’gari in April.

He avoided conviction this week after pleading guilty to the offence at the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court.

He was ordered to pay the fine, as well as $1500 in court costs, and sentenced to 240 hours of community service and two years of probation.

The magistrate considered the man’s self-reporting of the killing as a mitigating factor in the sentencing, Queensland’s Department of Environment, Science and Innovation said.

The department said the sentencing was a “clear message to visitors to the island that killing, deliberately harming, or committing offences against dingoes will not be tolerated”.

K’gari – formerly known as Fraser Island – residents and visitors are urged to report negative dingo interactions to rangers on 07 4127 9150.
