A man is fighting for life and a woman has been injured in an alleged stabbing at a Thai restaurant in Queensland.

Just 20 minutes before the eatery was due to open at 5pm, emergency services were called to the Joy Thai restaurant in the Townsville suburb of Kirwan.

Two people were stabbed, 9News understands.

One is a man, aged 38, who went into cardiac arrest after allegedly being knifed in the chest.

He is believed to be in a critical condition. 

The other person injured was a woman, whose age is unknown at this stage.

She was reportedly stabbed in the chest multiple times. 

A crime scene has been established and police told 9News one man is currently in custody and helping with inquiries.

Officers are also speaking to multiple other people at the scene, and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
