A man has died while swimming with friends in Parramatta Lake in Sydney’s west this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to reports that a man had gone beneath the water at the lake off North Rocks Road and failed to resurface just after 5pm.

Parramatta police led the search with the Marine Area Command, NSW Ambulance paramedics and surf lifesavers.

The search was called off after a body was retrieved from the water just before 8pm. (Nine)

The man’s body was retrieved from the lake about 7.55pm, NSW Police said in a statement.

“He has been formally identified as a 25-year-old man from Carlton,” police said.

“Police have been informed that the man was at the location with friends when he entered the water.
