Witnesses told police the 73-year-old was skiing when he struck a pole on the edge of a ski run about 12.30pm at Thredbo alpine resort.

“Other skiers commenced CPR prior to the arrival of medical staff, however he died at the scene,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Officers from Monaro Police District have established a crime scene and will conduct inquiries into the incident.”

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
