A man has died in a river on the New South Wales South Coast, the most recent in a string of drowning deaths in an alarming month of incidents.

The 53-year-old man was pulled from Nethercote Falls at the Yowaka River near Eden yesterday, following reports that a man was struggling to stay afloat in “rough water” at 2pm.

Paramedics and police attended the scene however he could not be revived.

The have been over 40 drowning deaths in the state since the start of December.

On Tuesday, a woman was caught in a rip at Coffs Harbour and was found unresponsive in the water.

She had been swimming with family members before the drowning occurred.

A father of five, Seti Tuaopepe, died at Penrith beach on Boxing Day, after falling from a paddleboard in a section of the beach that was unpatrolled by lifeguards.

Another two people died on the Central Coast after getting caught in a rip on Christmas Day at Umina Beach.

One included Canadian Ron Brean, who was swimming with his grandsons.

According to Royal Life Saving Australia, 34 people died from drowning over the same time period in 2022-2023.
