Police said he was arrested after an altercation with residents in Craigiburn, following his attempt to break into a car.
He was arrested and treated by paramedics but became unresponsive and died at the scene, police said.
Witnesses said residents confronted the man when they saw him trying to break into a car on Hothlyn Drive about 2.30pm on Wednesday, at which point “a scuffle ensued”.
Emergency services arrived a short time later.

Officers remained at the scene into the night, with a large section of the road still closed off as investigations continued.
Two men were taken into custody and were assisting police with their enquiries.
