Homicide detectives are investigating after a man died after being arrested in Melbourne.

Police have said they were called to reports of a man, who appeared to be substance-affected, armed with a wooden pole and causing a disturbance on Morrison Street in Kilsyth about 11pm yesterday.

An off-duty officer and a member of the public restrained the man until emergency services arrived, according to police.

The 39-year-old man from Kilsyth then became unresponsive while with police.

“The members commenced CPR on the man, including treating him with a defibrillator retrieved from the nearby police station, until paramedics arrived,” Victoria Police said.

“He was taken to hospital however died just after 6.30am today.”

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Homicide detectives will investigate the matter with oversight by the Professional Standards Command as per protocol for all deaths in custody.

The investigation will also review body-worn camera footage that captured the incident.
