A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a female police officer at a Sydney train station in the early hours of this morning.

Just before 2am police were called to Sydenham station, in the Inner West, after reports of a drunk man.

When police arrived the man tried to open the door of the police car before allegedly assaulting a female officer, leaving her with injuries to her face.

Additional police and security guards helped restrain the man, who was taken to hospital.

The officer was also taken to hospital with facial injuries but has since been released.

When the 39-year-old man was discharged, he was taken to Newtown Police Station.

He was charged with hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, and common assault.

The man was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court today.
