A man has been charged after a siege on a private property caused a nearby TAFE to be locked down in northern NSW.

Police were called to a private property due to concerns for the man’s welfare on the Bruxner Highway in Wollongbar, near Lismore.

He was taken to hospital for assessment before being taken into custody.

“There he was charged with use carriage service to make hoax threat, give false information person/property in danger, and possess prohibited drug,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“A further charge of contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO was laid in relation to a separate incident.”

He was refused bail and is expected to appear before Lismore Local Court today.

Yesterday, Assistant Police Commissioner Peter McKenna said the man was alone inside the property throughout the siege.

“At no time did that person of interest leave that property,” McKenna said.

“One of the precautions was to evacuate local areas just around that exclusion zone and that was all that was about.”
