A man has been charged after a police shooting in south-east Melbourne on Friday morning.

The charges were laid after a car allegedly evaded police in an attempted vehicle intercept by Victoria Police, on Police Road in Mulgrave at 5.30am yesterday.

A woman passenger, aged 29, was allegedly armed with a firearm and was shot by police after a confrontation occurred.

She was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where she remains. 

A 27-year-old man, the alleged driver of the car, was arrested at the scene.

He has been charged with 21 offences including reckless conduct endangering life, prohibited person possessing a firearm, aggravated carjacking, robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
