A Sydney man will face court next month after police allegedly found 60 kilos of methamphetamine worth an estimated $55.5 million inside supermarket shopping bags.

Police said the 42-year-old man was observed “acting suspiciously” as he drove a car and later a truck in Eastwood in the city’s northern suburbs on June 24.

The next day officers found and seized two shopping bags which allegedly contained one kilo of methamphetamine in a truck parked on an Earlwood street.

Later that week, on June 28, police searched a car in a supermarket car park and allegedly found 60 kilos of methamphetamine located in six cooler shopping bags in the vehicle’s boot.

Police said the drugs had an estimated potential street value of $55.5 million.

The man was arrested on June 29 and charged with one count of possess a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported border controlled drugs.

The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.

Police later searched the man’s home in Earlwood and seized mobile phones, a laptop, six luxury watches and clothing.

The man appeared before Parramatta Local Court on June 30, where he was remanded in custody.

He appeared before the same court the next day on July 1.

The 42-year-old will next appear in court on August 28 at the Downing Centre Local Court.
