A 25-year-old man has been charged after allegedly attempting to set a Melbourne business alight over the weekend.

Police said the man left hospital, before allegedly breaking into the International College of Meditation and Healing, a wellness centre on Salisbury Grove in Northcote, about 1.30am on Saturday.

He allegedly turned on the gas stove in the kitchen, before leaving. He returned a short time later, where he allegedly entered the centre, and doused it with petrol before trying to set paper on fire. He was unable to light the petrol and ran from the scene.

A 52-year-old woman was staying at the property and was injured.

The man has since been arrested and charged.

The Ivanhoe man has been charged with aggravated burglary, attempted criminal damage by fire, reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, stalking and other assault related charges.

The man will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
