Authorities had issued a shark warning earlier today after a whale carcass was spotted floating about 60 kilometres north.

An investigation is under way into what species of shark was involved.

A member of the public reported seeing a shark just five metres from shore at the same spot about 20 minutes after the man was attacked.

It is the seventh reported shark incident in Western Australia this year.
