Police have arrested a man after a suspected Molotov cocktail was thrown through the window of a restaurant in Melbourne early today.

Officers have been told the man was first seen in the foyer of a Whiteman Street hotel at Southbank following reports a small fire had been lit in one of the reception area toilets shortly before 12.30am.

The small fire was quickly extinguished before the man was seen leaving the area headed towards Clarendon Street.

A short time later emergency services were called to a Southbank Promenade restaurant following reports a suspected incendiary device had been thrown through the window of a restaurant along the waterfront.

It appears an outside awning and tables and chairs were damaged by the fire.

A 39-year-old Southbank man was arrested by police shortly after.

He is currently helping police with their enquires.
