The man, 24, was arrested after he was allegedly found hiding at an apartment complex on New St, Brighton following a car chase that began in St Kilda, in Melbourne’s inner south-east just before 8am.
A massive police presence was in the area while officers combed the area and earlier blocked off the road.
Police said the incident began when they witnessed the Preston man driving erratically on Queens Rd, St Kilda around 7.45am.
Officers attempted to intercept the driver before he allegedly took off, driving on footpaths and into oncoming traffic.
The man allegedly smashed into police vehicles and another car before coming to a halt near the intersection of North Road and New Street, Brighton, after police drove into the car in an attempt to stop him.

CCTV vision showed the masked offender running from his car, with police arriving on scene shortly after.
Images from the scene showed a Holden Colorado ute with damage to its driver’s-side door, and a Mazda 3 with damage to its front.
No one was injured during the incident.
The man is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
