A man, 45, and an 11-year-old girl have died in a crash on the NSW mid-north coast, after their car ran off the road and down an embankment.

Two young boys, aged eight and nine, were airlifted to John Hunter hospital where they remain tonight.

It was a concerned relative who raised the alarm about 1am, after the man and three young children never arrived at their destination as planned.

“The concerns were based around the fact that the persons were believed to be travelling to a relative’s residence and they failed to arrive,” NSW Police Chief Inspector Timothy Bayly said.

Around 3am, officers found the SUV down an embankment off The Bucketts Way, a long winding rural road near Gloucester, around a 3 hour drive North of Sydney.

The 45-year-old driver and an 11-year-old girl died, while the two young boys were trapped in the vehicle.

After being freed they were rushed to hospital, with the nine-year-old suffering significant fractures to both his legs, while the eight-year-old was physically unscathed. Both were in shock.

Investigators are now appealing for anyone who may have seen the crash to come forward as they try to piece together the tragedy.

So far this year, 269 people have now lost their lives on NSW roads.
