A Melbourne man who was dressed in a wig, glasses and a face mask when he was arrested at an ATM has been accused of stealing more than $30,000 by card skimming.

Police allege the 43-year-old had used cloned cards, which were made with the help of a “deep skimming” device used on ATMs, at least 15 times to fraudulently withdraw cash.

The Glen Waverley man was arrested at an ATM in Mount Waverley in Melbourne’s south-east about 6.30am yesterday and charged with nine counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception.

Card skimming equipment, a large amount of cloned bank cards, a hire company car and disguises were then found at the man’s home.

“Police believe the man has been utilising disguises including wigs, glasses and face masks, as well as using a variety of vehicles,” a police spokesperson said.

”The investigation commenced in January of this year when police became aware of a number of card skimming events throughout Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.”

The man was held in custody overnight and will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court today.

The investigation remains ongoing.
