A man is in a serious condition after he was allegedly hit with a ute and then attacked with a hammer on a Perth highway following a verbal fight on a construction site.

Police received reports of a physical altercation between two men on the West Coast Highway near The Boulevard in City Beach at 11.20am (AWST).

A 29-year-old man was found with serious injuries to his leg.

A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

Police said the two men, who are known to each other, had just been involved in an argument at a nearby construction site.

The 29-year-old man ran away from the construction site but was allegedly chased by the 25-year-old man in a Mazda BT-50 utility.

“It is believed the victim was struck by the vehicle before being assaulted with a hammer,” WA Police said in a statement.

Members of the public provided the 29-year-old man with first aid before he was taken to Royal Perth Hospital in a serious condition.
