A search is underway after a man allegedly stole a dirt bike and charged towards police officers.

The man allegedly took the motorised bike after meeting up with another man, who had legitimately listed the bike for sale on an online platform, in a sports field in Gregory Hills, Sydney on Tuesday. He then allegedly took off with the bike.

Multiple reports of a motorcyclist driving recklessly were made to Triple Zero around the same time, police said.

Dispatched officers said they were forced to draw their guns at the man, as he allegedly drove directly towards them on a street near Bradbury.

The accused ditched the bike when it ran out of petrol and took off on foot, according to witnesses.

“Because he ran out of petrol he just rolled, rolled, and then he stopped there and parked and then ran away,” one witness told 9News.

The owner of the bike told 9News that he was able to find the dirt bike as the man called him and told him where it was.

Police are still looking for the man, and have released CCTV footage of the accused.
