Officers were on patrol when they heard gunshots, and were then dispatched to a report of a person shot, police said.

Officers found a car had been shot up and a 77-year old man with wounds to his head and neck inside a house, police said. The man died despite efforts to get him to the hospital.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Alfred Shelton.

Some residents say investigators began canvassing the neighborhood looking for clues and any surveillance video.

“They heard like 20-something shots, and, when I asked them what it was, they said was someone with the car shot right here on 190th and Edbrooke,” resident Carmen Hollister said. “The building, the man, the older gentleman, it was a homicide, they say, because he was asleep.”

A man possibly related to the victim was inside the home Tuesday morning, but he did not share any information with reporters.

No one is in custody, and Area Two detectives are investigating.
