Rachel Moresi, 55, was discovered inside a unit on Pick Avenue in Mount Gambier, 450km from Adelaide, at 1pm on Wednesday

A man has been arrested after an Adelaide mother with a ‘zest for life’ was found dead inside her home, as heartbroken friends detail her final moments.

The body of 55-year-old Rachel Moresi was discovered inside a unit on Pick Avenue in Mount Gambier, 450km from Adelaide, at 1pm on Wednesday.

It’s understood she was found by her long-time carer, who was ‘crying’ and ‘hysterical’ following the grisly discovery, 7News reports.

It took firefighters up to an hour to remove debris from the scene after reports of ‘hazardous’ and ‘toxic’ smells coming from the home.

A 53-year-old man, believed to be known to Ms Moresi, was arrested on Thursday  on Portland, a Victorian city about 105km from Mount Gambier.

He is expected to be charged with murder and will appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Friday where SAPOL will apply for his extradition.

Ms Moresi has been described as a ‘kind’ mother and cat lover.

Friends were seen arriving at the unit on Thursday to pick up her pet cats with one revealing she had spoken to Ms Moresi the night before her death.

‘She was actually in a good mood,’ friend Justine told The Advertiser.

‘The last thing we said to each other the night before was, we both yawned, and we both said, it’s time for a nap, and we’ll see each other tomorrow.’

Neighbours described Ms Moresi as a ‘really beautiful person’.

Locals have left flowers on the grass outside the Pick Avenue apartment.

SAPOL has launched an investigation with officers at the unit seen looking inside rubbish bins and scouring the surrounding area for clues.
