Police are hunting a number of people after shots were fired from a Mercedes ute along a major highway on the New South Wales Mid North Coast.
Officers said in the early hours of this morning several shots were fired from a black Mercedes dual cab ute on the M1 at Coopernook, Kundabung, Fernbank Creek Road in Port Macquarie and the Telegraph Point area.
One of the bullets grazed a man who was driving in Coopernook.
He was assessed by paramedics and had suffered minor injuries.
A bullet also hit a police car that was attempting to stop the Mercedes on the M1 around the Fernbank Creek Road area.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Scott Tanner said the ute was found abandoned at Wayne Richards Park in Port Macquarie.
“Police are on the scene trying to locate any occupants of that vehicle,” he said.

Tanner said it is an active situation.
“It is a concern and that’s why we have plenty of resources around that area at the moment,” he said.
Tanner also said a man’s body was found on the side of the road at Fernbank Creek Road in Port Macquarie this morning.
“At this stage we don’t know if it is linked with this incident,” he said.
He appealed for anyone who saw people in the Wayne Richards Oval in Port Macquarie about 6.30am this morning to contact police.
Tanner also warned not to approach any of those people.
