A major highway on the NSW Central Coast has been closed in one direction and dozens of cars have suffered shredded tyres after a truck dropped metal debris over the roadway.

The M1 is currently closed southbound from Ourimbah to Mount White, a section of motorway almost 30 kilometres long.

It is estimated as many as 50 cars have suffered tyre damage as a result of the spill.

B-Doubles are being parked on the roadside and motorists have been urged to allow for extra of travel time.

This is a breaking story. More to come …
