A major highway has been closed in both directions after a truck and car crashed early on Monday morning.

The crash happened at about 6.37am on the Great Western Highway at Katoomba near Explorers Road in the Blue Mountains, around 102km west of Sydney.

A woman and a child in the car reportedly suffered burns in the crash.

The child was flown to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, 7News reported. 

The truck driver was taken to Katoomba Hospital for mandatory testing.

The highway has been closed in both directions west of Katoomba and motorists are being advised to avoid the area and make alternative plans.

‘Use Bells Line of Road instead and allow extra travel time,’ Live Traffic NSW said.

The police have established a crime scene.
