Kangaroo Island was rattled by a 3.6 magnitude earthquake early Wednesday morning

Residents and tourists on Kangaroo Island have been woken by a 3.6 magnitude earthquake in the middle of the night.

The quake was felt near Kingscote on the popular island off the South Australian  coast just after 1am on Wednesday, according to Geoscience Australia.

It was recorded at a depth of 10km.

More than 30 people reported the tremor. 

‘It was loud enough to wake me up,’ a local posted online.

Another added: ‘Scared me…wasn’t long but loud.’

No reports of damage have been recorded. 

South Australians on the mainland in Adelaide and Victor Harbor also reported feeling the tremor.

It’s the second earthquake recorded in South Australia within days, after a 2.5 magnitude quake rattled Laura in the state’s Mid North last Friday.

Kangaroo Island is home to a population of 4,894 residents and attracts more than 140,000 visitors each year.
