Footage has emerged of the moment a car speeds through a red light before it smashes into a 12-year-old boy and its driver flees the scene.

The boy was riding his bike with his brother and father when he was struck on Kessels Road, at Macgregor, in Brisbane‘s south, about 12.05pm on Thursday.

CCTV footage from a nearby business captured the trio crossing the road at a set of lights at a busy intersection before they disappeared from view behind a large sign.

A green Holden Commodore then smashes into the boy, with footage showing a bicycle being hurtled through the air and losing its front tyre.

A power pole comes crashing down before the father and brother rush to the boy’s aid amid the chaos.

The driver is seen bolting past the boy, lying by the side of the footpath, while his suspected passenger runs away in another direction.

Police allege the driver was behind the wheel of an unregistered vehicle in the lead-up to the crash and fled the scene through a nearby shopping centre.

Before the crash, officers had turned on the lights of their vehicle and followed the car in an attempt to intercept it.

However the green Holden Commodore allegedly sped off before then running through a red light and mowing down the boy.

Police have continued their search for the driver, aged in his 20s, and his passenger (pictured)
