A man is behind bars today after allegedly leading police on a pursuit through western Sydney in a stolen car with a loaded gun in the early hours of this morning.

Police had attempted to stop the car for a random breath test on the Hume Highway in Villawood at 4.15am.

However, the driver failed to stop as directed and police gave chase.

The driver of the allegedly stolen sedan made it as far as Henry Lawson Drive in Georges Hall before crashing into a parked car.

The driver was arrested and taken to Bankstown Hospital for mandatory testing.

When police searched the car, they found a loaded handgun and drugs inside which have been seized for further investigation.

The man has now been released into police custody and is being taken to Bankstown Police Station.
