Lisa Wilkinson: Waleed Aly appears to take a veiled swipe at ex-Project colleague discussing sexual harassment accusations facing Lizzo

Waleed Aly appears to have made a subtle swipe at ex-colleague Lisa Wilkinson as he weighed in on the troubling allegations levelled at pop star Lizzo. 

The Project host pleaded for caution on Monday’s show as the US singer faces accusations of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment by three former back-up dancers. Lizzo has denied the allegations.

‘You’ve got to be careful now. This is the lesson we refuse to learn,’ Aly said.

‘There’s allegations made and we jump in and start doing commentary and then later a court reaches a decision and we go, ‘Oh, what do we do now?

‘Maybe we’re better off if we didn’t end up making that mistake.’

Last year ex-Project host Wilkinson caused controversy by making comments during her Logies speech where she appeared to side with Brittany Higgins – even though Bruce Lehrmann’s trial was, at the time, just days away.

Ms Higgins first aired the accusations against Mr Lehrmann on The Project in February 2021 in a sit-down interview with Wilkinson.

The TV presenter was awarded a silver Logie for the segment, which delved into the culture of those working within Parliament House, but she was widely criticised in the aftermath of the speech.

Mr Lehrmann’s defence lawyers tried to apply for a permanent stay, which means they wanted the case thrown out altogether, on the premise that Wilkinson’s televised speech could prejudice a jury against Mr Lehrmann.

However, the stay application was unsuccessful and a temporary stay was granted – which meant the trial was moved from June to October 2022.

Mr Lehrmann stood trial in the ACT Supreme Court after pleading not guilty to sexually assaulting Ms Higgins, but the trial was abandoned due to juror misconduct.

A retrial was abandoned after the charges were later dropped by the Director of Public Prosecutions due to concerns for Ms Higgins’ mental health. 

Mr Lehrmann has always denied the allegations.
