Former Brisbane Lions player Aaron Shattock is fighting for life after an accident on the Gold Coast.

The 44-year-old was crushed under an excavator after it rolled on private property this afternoon.

Authorities arrived on the scene just before 1pm (2pm AEDT).

They used hydraulic equipment to free him before he was rushed to hospital with critical chest injuries.

Shattock was a part of the Lions 2002 Premiership winning team.

Police are investigating.
