Damaging winds have whipped through New South Wales with trees and power lines downed, and public transport cancelled in Sydney.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning for the entire Sydney region, with average wind speeds likely to hit 60-70 km/h, and gusts of up to 100km/h likely.
Light rail and ferry services in Sydney were cancelled in the afternoon because of the violent winds.
Light rail services were cancelled between Dulwich Hill and the John Street Square after a tram was hit by a fallen tree branch in Pyrmont.
Fire and Rescue NSW were dispatched after a branch hit the wires.
The driver and 50 passengers aboard the service were uninjured.
Passengers were briefly stuck waiting on the tram for emergency services to turn off the power lines.
Replacement buses were dispatched for the light rail route.
By the afternoon, the SES had been dispatched to 70 jobs across the city, mostly responding to downed trees hitting power lines and fences.
Ferry services on Sydney Harbour were also stopped, with F9 ferry services cancelled between Rose Bay and Watsons Bay due to strong winds.
The BOM has warned the strong winds could remain overnight and into Sunday morning.
“Damaging winds now expected to affect the entire #SydneyMetropolitan district this afternoon & evening, and potentially elevated parts of the #MidNorthCoast later today,” it wrote.
“Vigorous winds across the south & east are still expected to gradually ease late tonight or during Sunday morning.”
