A Good Samaritan has been stabbed after trying to break up a fight in a Tasmanian city street. 

Police said a A 17-year-old is in custody after an altercation in Brisbane Street, Launceston, on Friday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene about 2.15pm, after reports of a disturbance.

A man received serious, but non life-threatening abdominal injuries after he was allegedly wounded with a knife.

Police have confimed an arrest has been made and the victim is injured

The victim was taken to the Launceston General Hospital by ambulance and is understood to be receiving medical treatment.

Police said it was an isolated incident, and the alleged offender was quickly taken into custody.

Brisbane Street has been closed off.
