South Sydney fullback Latrell Mitchell has transformed himself in the off-season by getting off the booze and training his heart out after a white powder scandal almost derailed the troubled superstar’s footy career.

Recent photos of Mitchell show he is taking his fitness very seriously following a turbulent finish to the 2024 NRL season.

A slimmed-down Mitchell has shed at least 5kg during the offseason and is proving to returning coach Wayne Bennett that he means business by turning his home into a training base, News Corp reports.

The Bunnies fullback has demolished the bar in his home and replaced it with a personal gym complete with yoga mats, weights and a two-person sauna.

The enigmatic star will miss the season opener after being hit with a one-game ban for a photo that showed him bending over a table with an unidentified white powder on it.

Bennett, who has reportedly given the underperforming side a blistering review of their 2024 season, says he’s not concerned about Mitchell.

‘Latrell’s fitness won’t be an issue for me,’ the coach said.

‘I haven’t spoken to Latrell lately but if he’s in shape, that’s great to hear.

‘He has been dealt with by the NRL and the club [over the white powder saga].

‘I’m not there with Latrell at the moment but I’ll know a lot more about him in a month’s time.

‘They are all professionals and Ben Hornby (interim coach) did a great job late in the season.

‘Souths were in a tough place (following the sacking of coach Jason Demetriou), but they got out of that and they are back to being a footy team again.’

Mitchell posted shots of himself to Instagram assembling his new gym and sauna, signalling his commitment to make a change.

NRL great Corey Parker has also commented on the changes in the Rabbitohs No.1.

‘I saw a bunch of photos the other day…he looked extremely trim. He looked fit,’ Parker said on SEN Radio.

‘Hopefully there are some really good things to come. Obviously Wayne’s had a chat to him. But I don’t dislike the fact I haven’t heard Latrell come out and say things. Keep your nose down, Latrell.’

Mitchell won’t look back at 2024 with much fondness on and off the field.

He was suspended for three matches following a late elbow on Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson and then engaged in a war of words with Anthony Mundine which dragged on for weeks following the Spencer Leniu and Ezra Mam racism saga.

Throw in his expletive-laden post game Triple M interview, his public disagreement with NRL 360 host Braith Anasta at a Sydney restaurant followed by his now infamous white powder photo from a Dubbo hotel room and it was understandable fed up club officials wanted to see drastic changes.
