Victorian Labor MP Darren Cheeseman has resigned over allegations of “persistent, inappropriate behaviour in the workplace towards staff”.
Premier Jacinta Allan confirmed in a statement that she had sought Cheeseman’s resignation this afternoon.

Cheeseman has served as the member for South Barwon since 2018.

The premier said Cheeseman had agreed to resign but would remain a member of parliament and a member of the parliamentary Labor Party.

“Under the Ministerial Code of Conduct, Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries are expected to behave according to the highest standards of personal conduct in the performance of their duties and to behave in a way that upholds community expectations,” Allan said.

“Under the Code, Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries must take all reasonable steps to maintain respectful and appropriate working relationships with their staff, staff of other Ministers and MPs, Parliamentary staff, VPS staff, and Ministerial and Parliamentary colleagues.

“The wellbeing of staff and their right to a respectful workplace is not negotiable.”

Cheeseman previously served as a federal MP in the seat of Corangamite from 2007 to 2013.

9News has contacted Cheeseman for comment.
