What is it with politicians and bungled sausage sizzle photo ops?

Outside of the extremely courageous choice to tend a smoking barbecue in a crisp white shirt and slacks, there’s nothing particularly weird about this shot itself, taken on Australia Day 2023.

But then NSW Labor leader Chris Minns posted it on Twitter with a caption that provoked howls of outrage.

“There’s no better way to spend the day, than flipping snags for new Australians,” he wrote.

“I think my sausage rolls tasted almost as good as becoming a citizen!”

Not a sausage sizzle or a sausage in bread. Not even the technically correct sausage sandwich. Sausage rolls.

Western Advocate sports journalist Alexander Grant summed up the reaction.

“I know politicians have made much bigger gaffes than this, but there’s something so upsetting about someone calling a sausage sandwich a sausage roll,” he said.

Others were much less forgiving, with a few snarky jokes about the post costing Minns and Labor the upcoming NSW election.
