A Queensland L-plater has been hit with a range of charges after she was allegedly caught driving in Sydney with a small child in her lap and a phone in her hand.

Police in the Georges River Traffic and Highway Patrol received a referral from Transport for NSW after the woman was allegedly snapped by a mobile phone detection camera in Bankstown in November.

The photo allegedly showed her in a Queensland-registered car holding a mobile phone with an unrestrained small child in her lap.

Police confronted the woman in Padstow about 7.30pm yesterday.

She was charged with driving recklessly, using a phone while driving, driving with an unrestrained small child, driving as an L-plater without supervision, and not wearing a seatbelt.

She was issued a field court attendance notice.

She will appear at Bankstown Local Court in late January.
