A man has been shot by police after allegedly pulling out a knife in a hospital emergency room.

The man was shot at Kingaroy General Hospital in Queensland’s South Burnett Region at about 7.34pm on Friday. 

He is being treated by hospital staff and his condition is not known.

A witness said she saw the man come out of a toilet with a kitchen knife, the Courier Mail reported.

‘The man walked past our friend and past a woman with a small child,’ she said.

‘Police were called and the man was shot twice.’

The woman added that a female officer involved in the shooting broke down following the incident.
